SUMMARY:AIBS Biological Sciences Congressional District Visits
DESCRIPTION:The Organization of Biological Field Stations is pleased to announce that we are once again joining with the American Institute of Biological Sciences to sponsor the 16th annual Biological Sciences Congressional District Visits event. \nThis national initiative is an opportunity for scientists across the country to meet with their federal or state elected officials to showcase the people\, facilities\, and equipment that are required to support and conduct scientific research. \nThe Biological Sciences Congressional District Visits event enables scientists\, graduate students\, representatives of research facilities\, and people affiliated with scientific collections to meet with their federal or state elected officials without traveling to Washington\, DC.  Participating scientists can either meet with their elected officials at the local district office or invite them to visit their research facility. Meetings will take place mid-July through October\, depending on the participant’s schedule and their lawmaker’s availability. \nOBFS members who participate will receive one-on-one support and online training to prepare for their tour or meeting. \nWe encourage our members to participate in this important event. Participation is free for OBFS members\, but registration is required.  \nRegistration will close on July 14\, 2025.  To register\, visit io.aibs.org/cdv.

SUMMARY:Applied Bioacoustics in Conservation and Practice Field Course - July 2025
DESCRIPTION:Hosted in collaboration with the Organization for Tropical Studies and the African Bioacoustics Community\, this hands-on field course explores bioacoustics in terrestrial ecosystems. Participants will gain essential skills and knowledge to apply acoustic methodologies in ecological research and conservation. The two-week program combines theoretical foundations with practical techniques for field recording\, biodiversity monitoring\, and ecosystem assessment\, with a focus on real-world applications in Africa’s rich ecosystems. \nKey Topics: \n\nPrinciples of bioacoustics and sound propagation.\nField recording techniques and passive acoustic monitoring (PAM).\nSignal processing\, data management\, and species classification.\nApplications of bioacoustics in ecosystem monitoring and conservation.\n\nWho Should Apply: Graduate students\, researchers\, conservation practitioners\, and anyone with an interest in using sound as a tool for ecological and conservation research. \nWhat’s Included: \n\nAccommodation\, meals and transportation at the Skukuza Research Station.\nTraining materials and access to field recording equipment.\nInstruction and mentorship from experienced bioacousticians and ecologists\n\nScholarships: A limited number of scholarships are available. Applicants must submit a motivation letter as part of their scholarship application. \nRegistration and more information\nVisit https://tropicalstudies.org/course/applied-bioacoustics/. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis\, and spaces are limited.
