Lower Coast Field Station, a program of The ByWater Institute at Tulane University

The Lower Coast Field Station, a program of the ByWater Institute, is a research field station located on the Lower Coast Peninsula, encompassing both the Carmichael and Hebert forests with lab spaces and support offices located at A Studio in the Woods and the F. Edward Herbert Research Center. Future improvements are expected and will be guided by a NSF-funded strategic plan and the evolving usage of the field station.

The mission of the Lower Coast Field Station:

  • To carry out scientific research, science communication, and community engagement in the Lower Coast Forest, an expansive, biodiverse, and increasingly rare ecosystem.
  • To connect people across disciplines and institutions; providing a unique mix of outreach, research, and multidisciplinary partnerships.
  • To find innovative uses for underused Tulane properties (Hebert and Primate Center) while serving as a hub for exploring issues that match Tulane’s mission and research objectives.
