Stone Laboratory is a research, education, and outreach station located on Gibraltar Island in Put-in-Bay, Ohio in Lake Erie. We are part of The Ohio State University’s College of Food, Agricultural, and Enivornmental Sciences (CFAES) and School of Environment and Natural Resources (SENR) as well as the Ohio Sea Grant College Program. We collaborate with scientists from all over the world, offering lab facilities, field work equipment, research vessels and housing for researchers studying Lake Erie. Together, Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Lab provide the science behind informed policy and management decisions on science education, the Lake Erie ecosystem and its economic impact on the region. Stone Lab education staff conduct outreach on Lake Erie’s ecosystem at public events and upon request to groups all along the Lake Erie coast line. Our structured informal education is highlighted by our Lake Erie Science Field Trip program, wherein we offer 1-2 day scientific excursions on the lake and on our island campus to over 3,000 particIpants each spring and fall, with our target audience between 5th and 12th grade. Each summer, Stone Lab offers up to 20 OSU college courses and professional development workshops.
