Lalo Loor Dry Forest Reserve

The Lalo Loor Dry Forest Reserve protects 180 hectares (about 500 acres) of tropical dry forest, one of the last remnants of this rare and highly threatened habitat. Located in Ecuador’s Pacific coastal province of Manabí, between Pedernales and Jama, this forest lies in a transition zone between the very wet Chocó forests to the north and the very dry Tumbesian scrublands to the south. The reserve offers diverse habitats, from cool, humid forest valleys to rocky ridges where drier conditions dominate due to increased sun and wind exposure. As a result, a wide range of species can be found at Lalo Loor, some characteristic of the wet tropics and others favoring drier habitats.  The tropical dry forest has been distinctly understudied, and much remains to be learned about this threatened ecosystem. We’ve discovered huge range extensions, for example, for a number of plants and animals studied at the reserve, all because the region is seldom visited by scientists. Researchers may contribute to one of our on-going research projects or we welcome you to apply to conduct your own research while taking advantage of our facilities.

The Lalo Loor reserve is perfectly equipped for a wide variety of researchers interested in studying coastal Ecuador. 11 km of trails lead into the forest, and past an open air classroom ideal for presentations or courses. Deeper in the forest you will find the biological station, which can comfortably house up to 24 visitors in a two-story building with porches and balconies offering unparalleled views of monkeys swinging by and birds on the wing. Rooms have screens and beds are equipped with mosquito nets. The station has outdoor showers, and composting toilets that reduce our impact on the environment. Three delicious meals are served in a delightful dining room adjacent to the station Monday through Friday, where visitors can enjoy cozy candlelight evenings.
