The Dining, Residence, and Sustainability (DRS) Lead has the most advanced technical and operational experience with all aspects of the dining services and residential buildings and understands and enforces policies and procedures related to the dining and residence program. They will serve as the supervisor of 4 full-time seasonal DRS Coordinator positions. They will work alongside other DRS staff to complete all tasks required for the program including food preparation, service, and cleaning in the dining hall and cleaning in the residence buildings.

The DRS lead has advanced knowledge of processes and/or tools required to manage the DRS program and will seek to advance their skills by taking on-the-job training and/or certification or vocational training. As the lead it is required to become an expert on all commercial dining equipment and troubleshooting, have the ability to train and advise new staff annually, create work schedules and assign or delegate tasks to run the program effectively and efficiently. The lead will review work and conduct performance evaluations of 2 full-time, full-season DRS staff.

The lead anticipates, recognizes, and solves the most complex issues and questions that arise within the DRS program, or among Stone Lab’s customers. The DRS program interacts with the customer base daily and will handle questions and concerns regarding residing and eating at Stone Lab. Problem solving issues could entail addressing customer dietary restrictions, housing or roommate disputes, or any other general maintenance concerns for the dining hall or residences. The lead will anticipate where these issues commonly occur and troubleshoot the issues ahead of time to fix them. The lead creates and provides a healthy menu and prepares food for groups of up to 100 individuals at a time. The lead provides exceptional customer service to all guests including students, faculty, researchers, staff, and other visitors, and they must be capable of coordinating the logistics of a rotating customer base in Stone Lab housing units.

The DRS lead position requires limited supervision, and work may be accomplished without well-defined procedures. The lead makes decisions that consider not only established options and procedures but also may set a new precedent (with supervisory support). The lead will explore paths to improve the skills of the DRS staff and enhance efficiency of program logistics. The lead creates and manages food inventory and waste log procedures, as well as adheres to proper food preparation, handling, and safety procedures. The lead shall stay up to date with the most current guidelines and information as it pertains to food safety including staying current with Serv Safe certifications.

The lead routinely interacts with members of their immediate team, other teams at Stone Lab, and by conducting weekly DRS staff meetings as well as attending and reporting on DRS program updates at Stone Lab staff meetings. The lead effectively communicates matters of the highest importance, uses diplomacy and tact to convey sensitive information, and uses negotiation and persuasion to accomplish objectives. The lead is required to be involved with the recruiting, interviewing, and hiring of new DRS staff annually.

The lead shall work with others within the Stone Lab management team as well as networking with other university departments to create and manage an OSU-approved internship program for hospitality, sustainability, and other food production related majors.

The lead will continue to grow through professional development and networking opportunities. The continued creation of menu ideas with high quality products and implement quality control standards to enhance the dining and residence experience at Stone Lab. The lead will streamline procedures and continually enhance effectiveness and efficiency of the procedures and policies currently in place on the DRS side of the program, focuses on providing great meals at a reasonable cost, and monitors food budget and expenses. The lead works with vendors to procure goods and services in all residential buildings and the dining hall. The lead will supervise and participate in sustainable food and waste practices that minimize food waste and promote sustainable food and waste disposal actions.

Minimum Required Qualifications

A high school diploma or GED and 4 years of relevant experience. Certificate or vocational training may be required. Associate’s degree in relevant field and 6+ years of relevant experience is preferred.

The salary paid to an individual will vary based on multiple factors, including but not limit to, education, years of experience, internal equity, etc.
